Dr Chin Chong Min

Dr Chin Chong Min is a urologist practising at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore. He specialises in the surgical treatment of urinary cancers such as cancers of the kidney, bladder, prostate and testis, with expertise in laparoscopic and robotic surgery. His other area of expertise is in bladder disorders such as bladder dysfunction and urinary incontinence.

Dr Chin graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1986. In 1991, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow and Edinburgh, and obtained his Masters of Medicine degree from NUS. He did his subspecialty training at the Bristol Urological Institute (BUI) in the United Kingdom where he majored in oncology, incontinence and urodynamics.

Dr Chin did his residency programme in robotic urology in 2005 in the USA at the University of California, Irvine. He is trained in the latest da Vinci Xi system and is conversant with all 3 generations of the da Vinci robot. His experience spans more than 500 robotic prostatectomies.

Dr Chin’s expertise in robotic surgery has been featured on the media, from newspapers to magazines and television, both local and foreign. He has developed his own techniques in robotic prostatectomy and in February 2012, presented 2 videos of his original techniques at the prestigious 27th European Association of Urology (EAU) Congress in Paris.

Dr Chin has collaborated in many research projects on bladder dysfunction, ranging from clinical to pharmacological trials, epidemiological surveys and animal experimentation. He is the author of the 2nd edition of the Clinical Handbook on Management of Incontinence (2001) and the chairman of the committee which drafted the Clinical Practice Guidelines on ‘Management of Urinary Incontinence’ (2008). In the field of female urology, he is one of the first urologists to perform the tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) surgery, a minimally-invasive procedure for stress incontinence in women. He has done about 100 TVT cases since 1999, and is a designated preceptor to teach this surgery.

In the minimal-invasive management of urinary stones, he is qualified to perform percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL) and laser endoscopy. In 2001, he presented a video of his original technique of stone lasering within the stone basket at the 19th World Congress of Endourology in Bangkok.

Dr Chin is a senior consultant urologist based in Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital and an adjunct associate professor at the Department of Surgery at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He is also a visiting consultant to the Department of Urology at the National University Hospital (NUH) and Changi General Hospital.

Dr Chin’s publications include 23 peer-reviewed papers, 5 book chapters, and a book on urinary incontinence. He has presented his research and clinical work at various international congresses and lectured in many countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Russia. He is also a reviewer for the medical journal, Annals of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore and an examiner for the Urology Residency Annual Assessment.

An active member of the Singapore Urological Association, Dr Chin held the positions of Vice-President (2007-2008), Honorary Treasurer (2003-2004), Chairman of the Incontinence Subcommittee (2001-2008) and Research Subcommittee (2004-2006). Over the years, he has organised some 10 scientific meetings and workshops, and public education events like prostate awareness week, continence day, and men’s health symposiums.
