Dr Jaideep Raj Rao is a general surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore.
His areas of interest are in minimal access and robotic surgery, bariatric and metabolic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, oncology surgery, and hernia and complex abdominal wall reconstruction (hernia repair surgery).
Dr Rao was formerly a senior consultant and head of upper gastrointestinal, bariatric and minimal access surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). He started the bariatric surgery programme at TTSH and became director of the programme for 10 years before going into private practice. He has been practising medicine for more than 20 years.
He completed his basic and advanced surgical training in TTSH and Singapore General Hospital. He was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan fellowship by the Ministry of Health, Singapore in 2007 in advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He then completed his fellowship at Seoul National University Hospital and Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, South Korea in 2008.
Dr Rao is also a founding member and former president of the Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of Singapore; president of the Singapore Hernia Society; member of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders; board of governors of the Endoscopic & Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia; and executive council member of the Asia Pacific Hernia Society and Robotic Surgery Society of Singapore. He is an international honorary member of the Korean Laparoscopic Surgical Society and Korean laparoscopic gastric cancer working group, Chilean Surgical Society and Peruvian Surgical Society.
He is actively involved in clinical research and has several publications in peer-reviewed journals. He was also involved in teaching and was a core faculty of the surgical residency programme in Singapore. In addition, he was a clinical teacher at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.
He has received several awards including the Excellent Service Award in 2005.
Dr Rao is on the editorial review board for the Asian Journal of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgery, International Journal of Abdominal Wall and Hernia Surgery, and Hernia (Asia Chapter).
