Dr Lo Ngai Nung is an orthopaedic specialist at Gleneagles Hospital, Singapore.
His areas of expertise include the management of complex degenerative conditions of the hip and knee joints.
His interests include minimally invasive joint replacements and partial knee replacements, and accelerated recovery programmes after joint replacement surgery for early return to function.
He has over 25 years of experience in managing symptomatic degenerative hip and knee joints. He performs close to 450 joint reconstruction surgeries per year, many of which are complex cases or revision cases referred for further treatment.
In 1995, Dr Lo headed the adult reconstruction service of the department of orthopaedic surgery at Singapore General Hospital.
He was a visiting professor in orthopaedics to Ningxia Medical College in China, and emeritus consultant in orthopaedics to Liaocheng People’s Hospital in Shandong, China. He is also an adjunct professor of orthopaedics at the Duke-NUS Medical School, and associate professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He is also an examiner for the Master of Medicine (Orthopaedics) in NUS, and an examiner for the Thai Hip and Knee Society fellowship examinations.
He is a member of the teaching faculty of the ASEAN Arthroplasty Association and the Asia-Pacific Arthroplasty Society.
He was an invited speaker at international conferences like the World Arthroplasty Congress in Rome, and also regularly conducts surgical courses and masterclasses in hip and knee replacement surgery in the Asia-Pacific.
He has over 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is a co-editor of 2 textbooks in arthroplasty.
He initiated the Singapore International Foundation’s Vietnam arthroplasty surgeon training project in 2005 which involved volunteer doctors, scrub nurses and physiotherapists. He also conducted surgery and taught orthopaedic surgeons in Myanmar in a similar programme.
Dr Lo participated in the design of implants and instruments used in minimally invasive knee replacement surgeries which are now used worldwide. He was also a principal investigator in multi-centre trials involving new hip and knee implants and in trials involving anti-deep vein thrombosis drugs. He is currently collaborating on a novel hip prosthesis with enhanced stability.
He has received several awards including NUS Excellence in Orthopaedic Teaching Award in 2002 – 2004, SGH CEO’s Service Quality award in 2004, and the Heart of Gold Award in 2019.
For 25 years of his contributions to public service, Dr Lo was awarded the Long Service Medal (Pingat Bakti Setia) at the Singapore National Day Awards in 2013.
