Dr Tan Yih Kai is a general surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore.
His areas of interests are in vascular and endovascular surgery.
He has special interests in venous diseases (e.g. leg swelling, leg ulcers, and varicose veins), peripheral arterial disease, aortic aneurysm, carotid artery disease, diabetic limb salvage (e.g. angioplasty and bypass surgery), diabetic foot complications (e.g. infection, wounds, and gangrene), and advanced wound care.
Dr Tan was a consultant surgeon and former director of vascular services at Changi General Hospital (CGH). He was instrumental in setting up and expanding the vascular and endovascular services at CGH.
He earned his medical degree from the University of Queensland, Australia. He subsequently pursued higher surgical training in general and vascular surgery in the UK, becoming a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK.
He then undertook 2 years of post-fellowship training in Australia to advance his skills in complex open and endovascular interventions. During this time, he gained extensive experience in open vascular procedures such as abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, bypass surgery and carotid artery surgery.
Dr Tan is also a wound specialist in Singapore. He attained the Certified Wound Specialist Physician certification through the American Board of Wound Management. He was the founding member and chairman of the wound management committee at CGH, which started the nationwide annual CGH Wound Symposium.
At CGH, he revamped the wound care service by introducing evidence-based and state-of-the-art wound management techniques, leading to the creation of the CGH Wound Healing Centre. He was a member of the advisory board for ConvaTec Group, an international medical company specialising in wound and skincare products.
Dr Tan is also active academically. He has published in many peer-reviewed journals, including book chapters. He was involved in writing up an international wound hygiene consensus in 2019. He has given numerous presentations and chaired workshops for both public audiences and healthcare providers. He was a core faculty member of the SingHealth residency programme for general surgery.
He is also a founding member of the Society for Vascular and Endovascular Surgeons of Singapore.
