Dr Wong Sin Yew

Dr Wong Sin Yew is a Infectious Disease Physician with more than 25 years of experience in his field. He currently has clinics at Gleneagles Medical Centre and Mount Elizabeth Novena Specialist Centre where he sees patients with a variety of infections which may be due to viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.

Dr Wong received his MBBS from the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Singapore in 1984. Following that, he underwent basic training and completed his Masters of Medicine in Internal Medicine in 1989. Then in 1989, Dr Wong travelled to the United States where he spent two and half years as a Clinical and Research Postdoctoral Fellow in Infectious Diseases at the Stanford University School of Medicine and Research Institute, Palo Alto Medical Foundation. Later, he became a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore in 1994.

Apart from his practices at Gleneagles and Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospitals, Dr Wong is also a Visiting Consultant at the Singapore General Hospital and the National University Hospital. Prior to setting up his private practices, Dr Wong was formerly Clinical Director of the Communicable Disease Centre and Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Dr Wong has taken on teaching with fervor and played an active role in educating the next generation of Infectious Disease Physicians. He was a Clinical tutor in Medicine and Microbiology at the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore till 1997 and a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Medicine and Final MBBS Examiner at NUS until July 1999.

Research is important to Dr Wong, and he has written more than 40 original and review articles in peer review journals, as well as 6 book chapters on infectious diseases. He is a reviewer for the Singapore Medical Journal and the Annals, Academy of Medicine, where he received the Gold Reviewer reward in 2012. In addition to that, Dr Wong is an active investigator and has played key roles in several clinical trials, including serving as Principal Investigator of Phase II and III trials on linezolid treatment in MRSA infections and various MOH, NMRC and TTSH grants on transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Singapore.

Dr Wong’s vast experience in infectious diseases has taken him to Vietnam, Australia and Switzerland to speak at conferences and seminars like the Annual Scientific Meeting for the Australasian Society of Infectious Diseases, the World AIDS Conference As part of his strong commitment to the medical arena, he serves on several boards and committees where he shares his expertise with others. Dr Wong was an elected member of the Singapore Medical Council for two terms from 2006 to 2012. He is also a member of the Ministry of Health’s Antimicrobial Task Force and Advisory Committee on Medicine (Infectious Diseases).
