Tan 医生毕业于新加坡国立大学（NUS），曾在陈笃生医院接受内科、风湿病学、过敏和免疫学培训。他获得了英国皇家内科医学院 (Royal College of Physicians) 会员资格。他获得了卫生人力发展计划奖，并在澳大利亚皇家阿尔弗雷德王子医院 (Royal Prince Alfred Hospital) 完成了肌肉骨骼超声波和实验室免疫学研究。他已行医 20 多年。
在邱德拔医院工作期间，他同时担任医务委员会助理主席（人力和医疗事务）一职。Tan 医生现任新加坡医学科学院临床免疫学家和过敏学家分会董事会主席。
他的成就包括引进了一种新的自身抗体检测方法，用于鉴定炎症性肌病，该方法已成为治疗标准。他在邱德拔医院成立了首家风湿病、过敏和免疫科，并在金钟医疗中心 (Admiralty Medical Centre) 开设了痛风服务。
